what is this website?
a transwoman’s account of transitioning medically at the Mount Sinai Center for Transgender Medicine. Surprisingly very little information exists, from a client perspective, on the type of care they provide, so this is a resource for women seeking medical care at this facility. This covers bottom-surgery, laser hair removal, hormone replacement therapy, social work, speech pathology, and therapy.

how does this thing work?
each entry is organized by year so click on anything with an asterisk in front of it and you’ll jump to that story. there’s navigation at the bottom of each entry so you can go to the next entry from that page.

In Search of Self-Care

275 7th Ave

it was a hot july day when i saw dr reisman for the fifth time since starting HRT. i come prepared with a list of things to talk about because the visits tend to be short check-ins with the vampire.

  • talk about bottom surgery

i arrive at 275 7th ave and tell the guard i’m going to mt sinai in my feminine voice take the elevator to the 10th floor and check in at the front desk. CTMS is always blasting the TV so i’m pretty allergic to sitting in front of one and i position myself near the window overlooking the flatiron district. i wait for a bit and dr reisman pops out from the back and calls me in. Crystal! How Are You? yeah i’m doing great. I Have An Intern With Me, Is It Okay If They Join Us For The Check-In? yeah train em up. we enter the check-in room. So How’s It Going So Far? great, the new regimen seems to be working well. Yeah, Let’s Do Levels Today To See How You’re Doing. yeah great, i have a question, i’m starting the process to get gender reassignment surgery. Okay Great, I Can Order A Panel Of Tests For That. Doctor Ting’s Office Wants To See A Clean Record Of Drugs. You’re Talking About Vaginoplasty Right? yeah i’m talking about vaginoplasty and yeah i can pass a drug panel. Great, We’ll Run Tests. It Takes A While To Get A Consult So Give The Process Some Time. There’s A Lot Of Gatekeeping On Our Side To Make Sure You’re Ready For Surgery. Are You Seeing A Therapist At CTMS? yeah i’m seeing guthrie. Great. We’ll Also Put You In Touch With Our Social Worker Who Will Want To Know More About Your Plans For Recovery. okay great. Good Luck. I’ll See You In Six Months, Ok? sounds good i’ll schedule it at the desk. she leads me outside the testing room where i’m waiting to get my blood drawn. i’m called in and the nurse hands me a plastic cup. There’s A Bathroom Around The Corner Here. i leave with the cup and go around the corner to pee. the nurse takes my urine and five vials of blood. i get the results a few days later and heres what they tested me to clear for surgery:

  • Nicotine and Cotinine
  • Amphetamine
  • Barbiturate
  • Benzodiazepine
  • Cocaine
  • Opiate
  • PCP
  • Methadone
  • Cannabinoids
